Coldify

An open-source Docker volume backup tool with automatic restore verification.

Why I built it

If you've read my blog post about the infrastructure behind this website, you probably know that Coolify sits at the center of everything I run. It's an amazing open-source project, and I have a lot of respect for the people who build it.

But one thing kept bugging me: I had no reliable way to back up my whole deployment stack. I wanted to know that every service I host would survive, even if my entire VPS got corrupted overnight. So I built Coldify.

What it does

Coldify is a backup tool for Docker containers in general. In its simplest form, it's a wrapper around restic that backs up everything running on your server.

What makes it different is that it doesn't just dump backups into your S3 storage and hope for the best. It regularly restores them in throwaway containers to check that they actually work, and it gives you control over all sorts of things along the way.

I wanted something that, once configured, gives me peace of mind about my whole infrastructure. For the most part, I think I've managed that.

What's next

Coldify is at version 1 right now, and there's a lot more planned. The biggest piece is a dashboard: one place to control the agents running on all your servers, with backup schedules, verification methods, and availability all managed centrally. And much more after that.

Try it out

Coldify is open source, so feel free to dig into the code, give it a spin on your own server, or tell me what you'd want it to do. You'll find everything at coldify.dev.
